Enlargements are often thought to be the most popular form of plastic surgery. In truth, it is the third most popular procedure and covers more option than most people consider at first blush.

The procedure is technically known as augmentation mammaplasty. It involves the placement of an implant into both breasts for the purpose of enlarging and shaping the breasts. The earliest form of this procedure was undertaken in the 1860s in Germany with fatty tissue from the body used to perform the enhancement. As time passed, silicone implants became the implant of choice, leading to one of the most contentious debates in medical science. Ultimately, the silicone implants were banned in 1992 by the Federal Drug Administration. Improved design and further medical research has led to the reintroduction of some silicone implants and the FDA is considering approving further models.

There are several techniques used in enhancements and you should discuss the best option with your plastic physician. Nonetheless, the options are sub-glandular where the implant is placed in the body of the breast, sub-muscular for small chested individuals where the implant is placed below the musculature, and sub-fascial where the implant is placed between the muscle and outer fascial. The specific procedure is dependent upon the pre-existing conditions each person has.

A second issue that you need to keep in mind is the type of incursion technique. Specifically, where will the surgeon create an incursion in the body to put the implants? The axillary approach involves creating an incision in the arm pit and bringing the implant in from the side. Peri-Areolar involves an incision around the lower half of the nipple, in a semi-circle format. The Infra-mammary approach involves an actual incision into the lower flesh area. The incursion technique should be discussed carefully with your surgeon, particularly as it pertains to scarring issues. Incisions result in scars, and even tiny ones have to be taken into account.

Breast enlargement is done by having an implant placed through an incision, under the breast tissue or under the muscle. The incision can be made under the breast, around the nipple or under the arm. A breast implant is composed of an outer silicone shell filled with saline or silicone gel. The outer surface may be smooth or textured, and implants come in various shapes to meet the individual woman’s needs.

When the implant is placed under the actual muscle of the breast, there is a lower chance of contracture–contraction of the tissue surrounding the implant–and mammography is more reliable. There is also less risk of visible or palpable implant edges. The down side is that there are some people who believe the implant has a more natural appearance when placed above the muscle, under the breast tissue.

The shape of augmented breasts depends on the implant. Implants can be round or teardrop-shaped (anatomical). The choice depends on the look the female wants to achieve. Anatomical implants produce a gentle slope, resulting in a fuller upper area, whereas round implants create a round curve in the upper part of the breast. Another factor to consider prior to surgery is breast width, which determines the amount of “cleavage” between breasts and the outer curves.

Realistic expectations are important. Some women often think of breast size in terms of bra cup size. If an“A” size wanted to be a size “C”, then there still has to be adequate existing breast tissue coverage: otherwise there could be visible or palpable implant edges and other possible risks.

This is a major procedure, and someone undergoing breast augmentation absolutely needs someone to drive her home and stay with you for 24 hours after surgery. There will be pain the first few days, but normal pain pills should take care of this as the body adjusts to the new implants. Wear a bra at all times (except when showering) during the first 2 weeks after surgery. Avoid heavy lifting and avoid even moderate exercise for at least the first week, and then only moderate exercise. During recovery, the breasts will be somewhat swollen. Within a few weeks, the actual shape and size will be evident, and the full success of the procedure will come abundantly clear.

In 1895 the first implant was performed. As for the substances that were used, you will find that it left a lot to be desired.. It wasn’t until 1961 that silicone implants were developed. The saline implants followed in 1964. There have been other substances developed, but none as common today as saline and silicone.

Did you know that the American Society of Plastic Surgeons has stated that the breast augmentation is one of the most common types of surgeries that are being sought out? 329,000 breast augmentations were done in 2006.

The surgery doesn’t last that one, and it only takes and hour or two to complete the procedure. The visits between patient and surgeon before the surgery are usually spent discussing the type of procedure that will be used. The differences are in the type of implant, the incision that’s required and where it will be placed. Also discussed is where the placement of the actual implant will be made. Keep in mind that these factors will have an impact on the final appearance of your breasts.

You should be able to get back into routine within a week after surgery. You will want to keep in mind that it really depends on what it is that you are doing and the level of activity that is needed. You will wan to keep in mind that the scar will most likely be visible six weeks or even a few months. The scars will fade after some time.

Since the saline implant is so small when it is inserted, the incision can in turn be quite small. This tiny incision leaves a much smaller scar. The silicone implant is a cover or envelope containing a silicone substance. This implant requires a fairly larger incision for placement.

In the United States of America you will find that there are many restrictions for silicone implants. You will need to know these restrictions and you may also want to consider how common they are for American surgeries. Saline implants can produce quality results, but you will also find that there are more cosmetic issues to consider. If you have thin tissue you may end up having a wrinkling or ripple in the breast area.

Rippling and wrinkling of the implant may be seen in some cases. This can sometimes be easily noticed by others by either sight or touch. Women with more breast tissue do not generally have this issue. It is because of this reason that most board certified surgeons prefer the silicone breast implant for post-mastectomy reconstruction.

When it comes to using breast implants, you may find that silicone implants are more often used outside of the US than Saline is. You will need to consider that they also appear more realistic in appearance and in touch. Keeping in mind that that there are many health concerns to have when it comes to a leaking silicone implants. This can cause a reason for concern and also justify doing some of your own research, because you don’t want to put yourself at serious risk.
